Ideally, working from home would create now problems to you, your partner, or your kids.  But the reality is that it is not a set up that works for everyone.

Some partners love having a little more time together.  Others find it stifling and massively disruptive to their home life.  If your home office isn’t seeming to flow as well as you had hoped, here are three alternatives to look at.

1. The Backyard Office Pod

Backyard sheds turned into offices really took off during the pandemic- and for good reason.  It’s a quite space, away from the home that can be built relatively cheaply and easily.  These can range from utilitarian to incredibly beautiful and nicer than your own home in some cases.

Whatever your budget, it’s likely you could find something that would do and could be put relatively quickly to keep the peace in the home.  My friend used to work out of a literal woodshed once, and he referred to it as his “shed quarters”.

2. Renting A Space

There are a number of tech hubs likely in your area that can offer you anything from a shared desk to a conference room to a entire office for a price.  Usually these are equipped with some nice bells and whistles as well- coffee bar, snacks, and some even host after work happy hours.  Another alternative could be to rent a room or office from a friend who has some room to spare.

3. Add On To Your Home

This would be the more expensive option to putting in a backyard office pod.  However the benefit here is that it could add square footage to your home and thereby increase the value of your home as well.  If it’s functional enough, it could also become an ADU- and perhaps a money maker if you wanted to rent it out another time.

4. Return To The Office

If all else fails, you can always ask you boss if they have an extra desk back at the old office.  It could be that this work from home idea just isn’t for you- and back to the office you go.

Whatever situation you find yourself in, knowing your options can be extremely helpful.
