3 Fears Starting a New Remote Job

These were 3 of the biggest fears you may face with starting remote work.

Moving from an in person position to a fully remote position is a huge step.  There are a number of advantages to Remote Work that are pretty well described.  However with every upside there is also a downside.  Here were my biggest fears I had to fight with when evaluating if Remote Work was for a good choice for me.

3 Fears About Starting a Remote Work Job:

  1. Lack of Social Interaction:

This was one of my biggest concerns and is one of the biggest for most people looking at a Virtual role. How will I tolerate being by myself in my office with just my dog and cat for office mates?  Will I get by ok without the daily “Good morning” from my colleagues? Can I find a way to meet with friends for occasional walks in the week at lunch?  The potential loneliness of a remote role is certainly a concern that needs to be addressed.

All of these concerns should be addressed when looking at working remotely.

  1. Will I enjoy the job:

Having worked in a clinic my entire career switching to a fully remote position seemed daunting.  As with any new position, I had to evaluate the day to day responsibilities of the job and if it were a good fit for me.  The added remote work piece took a lot of thought and consideration as well as there are considerable advantages.

  1. Will I be able to keep work/life boundaries in place to do my job effectively:

My kids have a way of taking over any space we try to carve out for ourselves.  Would they respect my new workspace?  Could I actually have the quiet needed to have patient visits without them walking in?  Will my spouse be ok with me taking over the back office? After school would my kids let me keep working and would they need to come in and decompress about their day?

Reviewing these concerns with those we live with. Developing a morning routine that gets you ready for work, and other strategies are very important when looking at a remote work position.
